Skyworks Introduces the Industry's First Fully Matched 450 MHz CDMA Power Amplifier Module; New PA Addresses CDMA and Wireless Local Loop Handsets

Skyworks Introduces the Industry's First Fully Matched 450 MHz CDMA Power Amplifier Module; New PA Addresses CDMA and Wireless Local Loop HandsetsWOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2003--Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:SWKS), the industry's leading wireless semiconductor company focused on radio frequency (RF) and complete cellular system solutions for mobile communications applications, today introduced the industry's first fully matched, power amplifier (PA) module for CDMA and wireless local loop handsets that operate on the 450-460 MHz frequency band.

According to EMC, a wireless market research firm, subscriber growth rates for the CDMA 450 MHz frequency are expected to increase from 63,000 users in 2002 to 9.2 million in 2007.

Power amplifiers provide the energy for transmitting a wireless signal through the handset antenna to the base station, and are the biggest determinant of handset battery life and talk time.

"We are extremely pleased to expand our family of industry-leading PA modules with the addition of the world's first fully matched 450 MHz PA," said Klaus Buehring, Skyworks' vice president and general manager of power amplifier products. "Handset manufacturers worldwide now have the flexibility to choose our proven, field-tested PAs for their mobile handsets supporting Eastern Europe, Indonesia and potentially into China."

Skyworks' SKY77148 6mm x 6mm PA module meets the stringent CDMA2000 linearity requirements up to and exceeding 29 dBm of output power, allowing for longer talk times and smaller battery size. Implemented in a 7-pin multi-chip module (MCM) package, the SKY77148 is internally matched to 50 ohms, requiring no external matching components. Additionally, the device provides better receive-band noise than competitive MMIC devices.

When combined with Skyworks' SKY74076, CX74002 and CX20536 transmit and receive-chain RFICs, the company is able to provide customers with a cost-effective and complete radio solution for the CDMA 450 MHz frequency band.

Skyworks is an industry leader in power amplifier technology, having shipped more than a quarter of a billion PA modules to date, and has an extensive portfolio of solutions that encompass every major wireless standard including the world's smallest PA, a 3mm x 3mm CDMA module. The company manufactures its PA modules using an InGaP HBT process that maintains high efficiency for longer handset talk and standby times, as well as excellent linearity to increase data rates.

Price and Availability

Skyworks' SKY77148 CDMA PA module is sampling now, with volume production scheduled for the third calendar quarter of 2003. The module is priced at $2.00 per unit in volumes of 10,000.
