Skyworks Qualifies Direct Conversion Transceiver and Power Amplifier for Use with Intel's Cellular Processor

Skyworks Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq:SWKS) today announced that the company's GSM/GPRS Class 12 single-chip direct conversion transceiver and power amplifier (PA) module with integrated power control are qualified to operate with the new Intel® PXA800F cellular processor."Our direct conversion transceiver is an ideal solution for handset manufacturers looking to reduce the size and cost of new handsets while still addressing consumers' desire for new features and services," said Mohy Abdelgany, Skyworks' vice president of RF Systems. Recently, Maxon Telecom Corp. Ltd., a Korean phone manufacturer, was the first handset company to announce its plans to deliver an advanced GSM/GPRS handset to use the Intel PXA800F cellular processor along with Skyworks' direct conversion transceiver and PA module products.
The new MX-E320 is a compact entertainment phone with two color displays. Other features of the clamshell design include a video player, built-in camera, MMS messaging and games. The phone will be available later this year.
Skyworks' CX74063 single-chip direct conversion transceiver reduces the number of external components required to build a mobile handset by more than one-third, significantly reducing the size, cost and power requirements of next-generation GSM/GPRS handsets.
The CX74063 device integrates on-chip VCXO circuitry that allows phone manufacturers to use a small, low-cost crystal oscillator instead of an expensive VCXO module. When combined with Skyworks' CX77315 PA module with integrated power control, the company is able to provide customers with a highly integrated, low-cost solution in an unprecedented compact footprint.
The Intel PXA800F cellular processor features a high-performance, low-power processor running at 312 MHz based on the Intel Xscale technology with four megabytes of integrated Intel® On-Chip Flash memory and 512 kilobytes (KB) of SRAM for industry leading application performance.
In addition, the Intel PXA800F cellular processor includes a 104 MHz signal processor using the Intel® MicroSignal architecture with 512 KB of integrated Intel On-Chip Flash memory and 64 KB of SRAM, resulting in a complete system on a single chip for advanced GSM/GPRS cellular networks.
