Alpha Receives Production Orders for InGaP Power Amplifier Module; Products Being Integrated Into Multiple Wireless Handset Platforms

Alpha Receives Production Orders for InGaP Power Amplifier Module; Products Being Integrated Into Multiple Wireless Handset PlatformsWOBURN, Mass., Nov 15, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alpha (Nasdaq: AHAA) today announced that it has received production orders from a top-tier wireless handset OEM for its InGaP HBT (indium gallium phosphide heterojunction bipolar transistor) power amplifier module.

The AP134 module has been designed into multiple handset platforms of this customer. It will be used to provide RF functionality for GSM, PCS and DCS bands in both standard and GPRS modes. The module delivers state-of-the-art performance in a fully integrated, 50-Ohm input/output package that incorporates Alpha's proprietary silicon bipolar logic controller and high-performance InGaP HBT power amplifiers.

"Without question, for our OEM customers the key benefit of this module is integration," said Colin Sweeney, general manager of Alpha's Power Amplifier Business Unit. "A wireless handset manufacturer would need upwards of 25 separate components to achieve the functionality that the AP134 module delivers in what is essentially a single black-box solution. This level of integration translates into a more efficient design cycle and a faster time to market for the OEM."

Orders for these new platforms should generate sales in excess of $20 million for Alpha in calendar 2002, the Company said. "These orders, which come just six months after we introduced the AP134, dramatically extend our penetration into the module market," said David Aldrich, Alpha's president and CEO. "In addition to the orders announced today, a number of other leading handset OEMs are sampling the module, and we look forward to capitalizing on those opportunities in the months to come."
