CONEXANT ANNOUNCES EMBEDDED STACK DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM FOR EMBEDDED BLUETOOTH WIRELESS PRODUCTS
Generic Lower Stack Software Interface Allows Developers to
Cost-effectively
Port Upper Stack, Profiles and Applications to Conexant's Host Controller
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 10, 2001 — Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, today announced an embedded stack development platform for its Bluetooth™ wireless technology system solution. The development platform features a generic lower stack interface, documentation, development boards and other items necessary for embedded product development. This allows developers to embed their own upper layer protocol stack and applications directly onto the Conexant ARM7TDMI baseband controller, eliminating the need for an external host processor controller and reducing system bill-of-materials costs, while providing a time-to-market advantage. In addition, an embedded solution can yield smaller form factor designs. Bluetooth is a key enabling technology for voice and data personal networking applications.
According to research firm Cahners In-Stat, Bluetooth silicon revenue is expected to reach $3.7 billion in 2005, with embedded solutions representing the dominant volume over that period. "Embedded, single-processor Bluetooth products will become more important as the Bluetooth market grows, and users move to connect an increasing number of devices together using this technology. Conexant's embedded stack development platform is a major step forward in enabling rapid embedded product development of high-volume, low-cost products," said Joyce Putscher, Director, Cahners In-Stat.
The Conexant embedded stack development platform consists of a set of application programmer interfaces (APIs), and associated documentation that give access to kernel resources, general purpose input/outputs, audio controls, universal asynchronous receive transmit (UART) interface, serial memory access and other on-chip resources. A key feature is the Conexant packet transfer API through which the host controller interface (HCI) commands and events are passed. This API minimizes porting efforts and maximizes processor throughput. Conexant's Bluetooth System Solution is targeted for low-power, battery-operated devices that require extended battery life, small form factors and low system cost. It is well suited to embedded product development, with 192K of read-only memory to eliminate external program flash memory, and 192K integrated random-access memory for design flexibility. Over-the-air data rates of up to 720 kbps have been demonstrated, along with -40 to +85C operation, 7-slave piconet and Class 2 range that exceeds the specification.
