Conexant Announces Shipment of 100 Millionth Power Amplifier Module

Conexant Announces Shipment of 100 Millionth Power Amplifier ModuleNEWPORT BEACH, Calif., — August 20, 2001 — Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, today announced that it has reached a milestone with the shipment of its 100 millionth power amplifier (PA) module. Conexant provides PA modules to handset customers worldwide, and reached the 100 million mark with a shipment to Samsung Electronics. Power amplifiers provide the energy for transmitting a wireless signal through the handset's antenna to the base station, and are a key element in determining battery life and talk time.

Conexant is the world's largest supplier of code division multiple access (CDMA) power amplifiers modules. The company's history in power amplifiers dates back to February 1996, when the company commenced high-volume shipments supporting multi-band, multi-mode, digital wireless applications. Conexant introduced its first PA module in 1997.

Conexant's CDMA solutions continue to lead the market in efficiency and linearity and include the System Smart line of PAs. The company's PA modules can be found in some of the most advanced terminals in the world. Conexant was also the first to introduce high-volume, laminate-based PA modules used in global system for mobile communications (GSM) and time division multiple access (TDMA) applications. Today, virtually all of Conexant's power amplifier solutions are implemented in modules.

"Mobile handset manufacturers are in the process of moving from MMICs to modular power amplifier solutions. Modules reduce the component count and provide a smaller footprint, both essential for next-generation handset designs," said Stan Bruederle, chief analyst for industry research and advisory firm Gartner Dataquest.

"This event marks a significant milestone in Conexant's wireless history, and is evidence of our continued commitment to utilizing top engineering talent, progressive processes and packaging technologies to create advanced semiconductor solutions for our global customer base," said Moiz Beguwala, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Wireless Communications Division. "We're especially pleased to commemorate this achievement in conjunction with Samsung, an industry innovator and a long-term Conexant customer."

Conexant's early investment in PA module technology helped set the benchmark for power amplifier functionality, performance and cost. Now, virtually all major manufacturers of cellular phones have adopted PA modules for future platforms.

Conexant's PA modules are based on a 50 GHz gallium arsenide (GaAs) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) process technology. GaAs HBT is the technology of choice for power amplifiers because of its ability to maximize a digital cellular handset's power efficiency and battery life.

Conexant has an extensive portfolio of PA products that encompasses solutions for every major wireless standard including WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, TDMA, AMPS, and wireless local loop applications.
