CONEXANT'S GSM/GPRS SYSTEM SOLUTION SELECTED
BY SAMSUNG FOR NEXT-GENERATION HANDSETS
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., — July 19, 2001 — Conexant Systems,
Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for
communications applications, today announced that its global system
for mobile communications/general packet
radio system (GSM/GPRS) has been selected by Samsung for use in several
new
handset designs.
"We have worked closely with Samsung on several new handset designs, allowing Samsung to expand their product portfolio," said Moiz Beguwala, senior vice president and general manager for Conexant's Wireless Communications Division. "Samsung's selection of our GSM/GPRS system solution builds on our long-term relationship and continued joint commitment to provide consumers with stylish, feature-rich phones."
Beguwala noted that Samsung also has incorporated Conexant's GSM solution in multiple GSM handsets. Available today, the handsets offered include form factors ranging from small folder type to slightly larger flip phones, with rich features such as a WAP browser, predictive text input, Chinese character input, IrDA interface, calendar, "To do" list, multiple games and an integrated MP3 player.
"We're pleased to expand upon our relationship with Conexant, and believe that their GSM/GPRS solution will enable us to deliver valuable new functionality to our customer base in a cost-effective and timely manner," said D. I. Sohn, senior manager of marketing for Samsung Electronics.
Conexant provides power amplifiers, radio frequency (RF) components and RF subsystems for the world's major wireless communications standards including GSM/GPRS, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), as well as a complete system solution that includes the protocol stack and other software for GSM and GSM/GPRS systems.
About the GSM/GPRS Solution
Conexant's GSM/GPRS system solution includes all major ICs, a full protocol stack, MMI API, all necessary development and manufacturing tools and customer intimate support required to build a complete Internet-enabled GSM/GPRS handset. The hardware portion of Conexant's solution implements all digital and analog baseband processing, multiband/multi-slot power amplification, power management, battery charging and transceiver functions. The system uses an industry-leading, low-power, direct-conversion architecture transceiver, which eliminates the intermediate-frequency conversion steps of earlier mobile handset solutions. Conexant's protocol stack and MMI API have been field tested in over 20 countries worldwide, qualified and approved by over 50 GSM network providers across Europe and Asia.
