CONEXANT'S
POWER AMPLIFER MODULE SELECTED BY
ACER COMMUNICATION AND MULTIMEDIA INC.
Next-generation
Digital Cellular Handsets to Include
Conexant's GSM Dual-band PA Modules
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., — September 5, 2001 — Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, today announced that Acer Communication & Multimedia Inc. has selected its dual-band power amplifier (PA) module for use in next-generation digital cellular handsets for the Asian and European marketplace.
Conexant's CX77301 PA module is specifically designed for use in 900
MHz and
1800 MHz global system for mobile communications (GSM) operating bands.
The module also supports dual-slot transmission, general packet radio
system (GPRS) operation. Power amplifiers are a critical element in
determining battery life and talk time.
"We're pleased to expand upon our relationship with Conexant, and
believe that their dual-band power amplifier module will enable us to
deliver highly reliable, high-performance, new products to our customer
base in a cost-effective and timely manner," said Dr. Irwin S.
Chen, vice president and general manager of the wireless communication
business of Acer Communication & Multimedia Inc.
"We are proud of the strong engineering relationship we have built with a Acer Communication & Multimedia Inc., and look forward to a continued long-term affiliation that will benefit the cellular industry," said Moiz Beguwala, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Wireless Communications division. "Our power amplifier modules offer mobile phone manufacturers greater efficiency, performance, and ruggedness, and our innovative packaging meets the size requirements necessary to produce compact world-class handsets such as those offered by Acer Communication & Multimedia Inc."
The CX77301 power amplifier module contains internal components for 50 ohm input and output matching, substantially reducing the external components for mobile phones and enabling the integration of multiple devices and all PA circuitry into a single, small form-factor package.
Conexant's PA modules are based on a 50 GHz gallium arsenide (GaAs) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) process technology. GaAs HBT is the technology of choice for power amplifiers because of its ability to maximize a digital cellular handset's power efficiency and battery life.
Conexant has an extensive portfolio of PA products that encompasses
solutions for every major wireless standard including WCDMA, GSM, CDMA,
TDMA, AMPS, and wireless local loop applications.
About
Acer CM
Founded in 1986, Acer CM's early foundation was built around on black-and-white
monitors, AC power supplies, and engineering workstations. In 1990 the
company was recast as a vendor of computer peripherals, which led to
explosive growth from 1992-1996 that saw revenues jump from NT$ 2.6
billion to NT$ 26.9 billion. As growth was peaking-and other manufacturers
wavered-Acer CM entered the communications sector in 1994 with a self-developed
mobile phone, becoming the only domestic vendor to market mobile phones
under its own brand name. This proved to be a prescient move as desk-top
monitors generating 90% of Acer CM revenues at that time now account
for less than 30%, with its own-brand mobile phones becoming a major
contributor to the bottom line. Now matured, Acer CM boasts six major
business units in the display, digital display, storage, imaging, wireless,
and broadband areas, transforming the organization into a full-fledged
electronic communications enterprise. To learn more, visit us at www.acercm.com.tw.
