Motorola and Skyworks Sign Development Agreement for the Helios(TM) DigRF Radio Solution for Next-Generation EDGE Platforms

Motorola and Skyworks Sign Development Agreement for the Helios(TM) DigRF Radio Solution for Next-Generation EDGE PlatformsLIBERTYVILLE, Ill. & WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 2005--

Agreement Addresses Front-End Modules and Single-Chip Direct

Conversion Transceivers in Support of Multimedia Handsets

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS) today announced a development agreement that would allow production of complete EDGE radios based on Skyworks' Helios™ DigRF Radio solution. The new chipset will be designed to support next-generation mobile handsets featuring high-speed Web browsing, music downloads and streaming video and would be Skyworks' first solution to deliver transceiver functionality for Motorola wireless devices, creating an opportunity for Skyworks to more than double its addressable semiconductor content per mobile handset.

With its patented closed Polar Loop and flexible radio architecture, Skyworks' DigRF EDGE solution is the smallest and most efficient design of its kind. DigRF EDGE requires just 10 external components to implement a complete RF section with a digital interface. Motorola may leverage the DigRF EDGE solution in the design of several of its next-generation mobile handsets. The Helios™ DigRF EDGE solution expands Skyworks' highly successful EDGE radio family, a proven analog solution currently in high volume production. DigRF EDGE also showcases Skyworks' ability to pair field-proven front-end modules and direct conversion transceivers, while adding a digital interface to meet the emerging DigRF specification.

"Skyworks' Helios™ EDGE radio pushes the performance envelope and offers Motorola tremendous design flexibility, field reliability and ease of implementation," said Rob Shaddock, chief technology officer for Motorola Mobile Devices. "Our adoption of Skyworks' DigRF radio would signify our commitment to the DigRF technical specification."

"We are delighted that Motorola has selected Skyworks to develop the Helios™ DigRF EDGE radio as a candidate for use in a number of their future handsets," said David J. Aldrich, president and chief executive officer of Skyworks Solutions. "This strategic agreement enhances our supplier relationship with Motorola, particularly as we move beyond our existing GSM/GPRS, CDMA and iDEN front-end module positions currently incorporated within their various must-have models, including the Motorola RAZR and ROKR mobile handsets."

About the Helios™ DigRF EDGE Radio

Skyworks' DigRF EDGE subsystem occupies less than 210 mm(2), minimizing the number of external components and substantially reducing the complexity, cost and power requirements of next-generation EDGE platforms. The DigRF standard, which repartitions the analog to digital interface within the system layout, takes advantage of Skyworks' analog mixed signal capabilities, as well as software strengths. Leading OEMs and baseband providers throughout the world are increasingly adopting this partitioning approach.

The SKY74200 DigRF EDGE transceiver is a highly integrated device packaged into a 64-pin 7 x 11 mm multi-chip module (MCM). When coupled with the SKY77520 FEM, this subsystem supports multiband GSM/GPRS/EDGE air interfaces, and GSM850, EGSM900, DCS1800 and PCS1900 applications.

Helios'™ DigRF receive path leverages a direct down-conversion architecture that eliminates the need for intermediate frequency (IF) components. The transceiver device also generates a number of internal, general-purpose inputs/outputs (GPIOs) used for timing and control, and an analog signal to control the PA output level. It integrates low drop out (LDO) voltage regulators that allow it to connect directly into a single cell, 3.1 to 4.5 volt lithium-ion battery with no external regulation required.

The SKY77520 transmit-receive FEM is designed in a compact form factor of 8 x 8 mm MCM for quad-band cellular handsets, enabling a complete transmit-VCO-to-antenna and antenna-to-receive surface acoustic wave filter solution. The RF inputs and outputs are matched to 50 ohm for ease of integration.
