Skyworks Captures Additional Design Wins with Helios EDGE RF Subsystem; Quanta to Launch Skyworks-Based EDGE Products Early Next Year
Quanta, based in Taiwan, is an original development manufacturer (ODM) to top-tier handset suppliers worldwide. Quanta plans to introduce a number of new handsets with advanced features of varying complexity such as color displays, integrated digital cameras, Web browsing and multimedia messaging services (MMS).
"As a high volume supplier of field-proven GPRS PA modules and direct conversion transceivers to Quanta over the years, Skyworks is our natural choice as we aggressively migrate to EDGE platforms," said Georges Boulloy, senior vice president and general manager of Quanta's Wireless Business Unit. "Helios highlights Skyworks' unique ability to pair field-proven front-end module technology with radio functionality -- simplifying our RF architecture, improving power efficiency, reducing component count and lowering our overall bill of materials. While most RF component suppliers only promise this level of integration, Skyworks is delivering today."
"We are delighted to extend our existing relationship with Quanta into EDGE applications," said Mohy Abdelgany, vice president and business director, RF Solutions, at Skyworks. "We look forward to successful ramps at Quanta, as well as at a number of other leading OEMs and ODMs, as they introduce leading-edge handsets based on our Helios solution over the coming months."
According to a recent study published by Visant Strategies, the total number of EDGE users is expected to surpass 130 million within five years. Meanwhile, the chipset market for EDGE components in wireless handsets is expected to approach $2 billion by 2009, with more than $31 billion worth of GSM/GPRS/EDGE-enabled handsets sold worldwide.
About Helios
Skyworks' complete RF subsystem for E-GPRS (GSM/GPRS/EDGE) mobile handsets includes the company's leadership single-chip direct conversion transceiver, power amplifier (PA) module and a PA controller/modulator. Helios utilizes the company's patent-pending Polar Loop transmit modulation technology, which eliminates expensive components such as SAW filters, and saves handset designers significant space, cost and design-cycle time with improved performance. This approach has the potential to enhance PA efficiency in EDGE mode by up to 10 percent when compared to conventional architectures, resulting in improved talk times.
