Skyworks Planning to Expand Cedar Rapids Facility to Meet Growing Demands of Wireless Semiconductor Industry
Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: SWKS), an innovator of high performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors enabling mobile connectivity, today announced it is proposing to expand its Cedar Rapids facility by 50 percent. The existing building is 28,548 square feet, and the plan is to add 14,366 square feet. Groundbreaking is planned for late August with occupation in February 2009.
“Our Cedar Rapids Design team is expanding to meet the growing demands of the dynamic wireless semiconductor industry,” said James Young, vice president of engineering. “We have an established track record of innovation and successful product development in Cedar Rapids and look forward to growing our business in the future.”
Skyworks has chosen to expand its Cedar Rapids facility based on the location and the positive experience the company has had with the local community. The facility houses design engineering, layout and testing for a variety of Skyworks’ products. The company will employ an additional 30-plus design engineers, product engineers, layout designers, managers and technicians in the next three years. Skyworks currently employs roughly 100 people at its Cedar Rapids Design Center.
“The expansion of Skyworks’ design center further demonstrates that the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor continues to be at the forefront of innovative technologies," added Mark Seckman, president of Priority One. “Priority One will aggressively assist Skyworks through our workforce initiatives to attract the highly skilled personnel needed to fulfill the technologically advanced positions created by this expansion.”
The project is subject to formal approval for financial assistance, which includes tax credits and property-tax exemptions from the City of Cedar Rapids, Kirkwood Community College, and the State of Iowa.
