Skyworks Gains Market Traction with Comprehensive 3G Infrastructure Portfolio; Several Highly Integrated Products Ramping in Volume Production with Top-Tier Base Station OEMs
WOBURN, Mass., Jun 12, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS), an industry leader in radio solutions and precision analog semiconductors, today announced that its extensive infrastructure portfolio continues to gain traction, having recently secured design wins with four of the industry's top five infrastructure base station OEMs. Over the last two years, Skyworks has significantly invested in research and development to expand its cellular infrastructure portfolio and bring the same high levels of radio frequency (RF) integration to the cellular base station market as it has to mobile handsets, while at the same time gaining additional dollar content.
"With the launch of several differentiated products, Skyworks is offering its customers leadership solutions that speed time-to-market while reducing costs and overall footprints," said Stan Swearingen, vice president and general manager for Linear Products at Skyworks. "Skyworks' infrastructure portfolio is ideal for OEMs at any stage, from implementing system upgrades to developing next-generation 3G and 3.5G designs."
According to Strategy Analytics, wireless infrastructure capital expenditures will increase to $70 billion by 2007, a more than 50 percent increase since 2003, reflecting the much anticipated build out of 3G networks required to handle the migration to WCDMA where handsets and base stations must process voice and data simultaneously.
Skyworks' infrastructure solutions, which offer superior performance and reduced form factors, are designed for current as well as next-generation base stations and other wireless applications. The company's expanded portfolio includes high-performance receiver front-ends, down-converters, linear power amplifiers (PAs) and drivers, as well as all of the necessary RF microwave discrete and passive components. Each component covers a wide range of frequencies, making them ideal for base stations, satellite transceivers, wireless routers, wireless local loop (WLL), image storage modules (ISMs), telemetry, RF identification (RFID), and other global wireless applications.
Skyworks today is in volume production with, among others, the following infrastructure solutions, having already shipped more than one million units in 2006:
-- SKY73020: a high performance dual mixer that supports two-channel diversity and combines an IF amplifier, switches and local oscillator (LO) drivers into a single device, accomplishing what was previously performed by nine discrete components. Skyworks' mixer also offers a unique combination of gain and IP3 -- two critical specification parameters for current generation base stations -- enabling exceptional dynamic range performance;
-- SKY65028: a high-performance, ultra-wideband linear amplifier with superior output power and efficiency. The device is fabricated using Skyworks' high-reliability aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology; and
-- SKY65004: an ultra-wideband PA with enhanced output power, linearity and efficiency. Manufactured using Skyworks' high-reliability AlGaAs HBT technology, this makes it ideal for use in the driver stage of infrastructure transmit chains for Trans-European Trunked Radio (TETRA) transceivers, multiband GSM, advanced mobile phone system (AMPS), PCS, defense communications system (DCS) handsets, and many other wireless applications.
Skyworks' infrastructure portfolio, a key component of its Linear Products business, is characterized by longer product lifecycles. Skyworks launched its Linear Products business to aggressively leverage the company's core analog product portfolio and modeling capabilities, along with its strong catalog sales channels and specialized rep and distributor networks, in non-handset applications. To date, Skyworks has secured several strategic design wins in the medical, broadband, automotive and industrial markets.
