Skyworks Delivers Highly Integrated Front-End Module for Broadcom's 54g(TM) Chip Set
WOBURN, Mass., Jul 19, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS), a global leader in analog, mixed signal and digital semiconductors for mobile communications applications, today announced that Broadcom has selected its SKY65206, an integrated front-end module for 802.11 b/g wireless LAN applications, as a reference design for use in conjunction with their 54g chip set. This solution builds upon Skyworks' core analog technologies, integration expertise and multi-chip module packaging capabilities developed in the cellular handset market.
"By partnering with Skyworks, Broadcom will continue to deliver products that will greatly improve the Wi-Fi user experience," said Brian Bedrosian, senior product line manager for Broadcom's Home & Wireless Networking business unit.
"Skyworks' wireless LAN front-end module meets Broadcom's need for a complementary architecture that simplifies and accelerates customers' design cycles through the integration of key RF functionality in a compact package," said Sean Martin, Skyworks' senior director of marketing for Linear Products. "Broadcom's customers can now easily incorporate our product to meet their performance and design specifications."
The SKY65206 is an 8 mm x 7 mm single band 802.11 b/g front-end module that integrates a power amplifier with bias control, input/output filters, and a diversity antenna switch, decreasing the number of components and saving critical board space. Alternative discrete implementations may require up to 20 individual components. With its high linearity and high gain, the SKY65206 also improves data throughput and enhances the transmit range for any wireless product, thereby allowing users to remain connected at greater distances. Its directional power detection makes the module insensitive to antenna mismatches, enabling consistent transmission performance in a variety of operating environments.
According to Christopher Taylor, director of RF and Wireless Components for Strategy Analytics, an industry research firm: "Demand for front-end modules for Wi-Fi will grow significantly in the next few years, with estimates for 2007 approaching approximately 50 million units, up from 7 million units in 2004. Skyworks is well positioned to deliver this key technology given their success in pioneering front-end module technology for the handset."
All of Skyworks' wireless LAN front-end modules are offered in a laminate-based, plastic multi-chip module packaging, are screened at operating frequency prior to shipment for guaranteed performance, and comply with all FCC and IEEE 802.11 requirements.
The SKY65206 is ramping to volume production this quarter.
