Skyworks Captures Next-Generation RF Subsystem Designs at Quanta
Previously, Quanta had been using Skyworks' first-generation DCR within its tri-band GSM handsets. Based on the outstanding performance characteristics of Skyworks' 6 x 8mm iPAC PA module and second-generation 8 x 8mm DCR transceiver, Quanta has designed the pair of devices into a series of new GPRS handsets scheduled to be introduced in China, Asia, Europe and the Americas over the coming months. Additionally, Skyworks will be supporting Quanta's launch of numerous other GPRS phones to its ODM customers throughout 2004, including handsets with embedded cameras and color displays.
"Skyworks' unparalleled level of RF integration gives Quanta tremendous power consumption, space, cost and time-to-market advantages relative to competing approaches," said Georges Boulloy, senior vice president and general manager of Quanta's Wireless Business Unit. "As a clear leader in developing extremely power-efficient PA modules and highly integrated direct conversion transceiver technology, Skyworks has optimized the entire handset RF section and delivered an extremely flexible solution for our next-generation GPRS handset platforms. We look forward to future collaborations with Skyworks on EDGE and WCDMA."
"We are particularly excited to become the lead supplier of PA modules and RF transceivers for Quanta, one of the world's fastest growing handset ODMs," said Mohy Abdelgany, vice president of RF solutions. "We continue to differentiate ourselves by offering simplified handset architectures, better system efficiency, lower procurement costs, a reduced bill of materials and unrivaled customer support."
The DCR transceiver cuts the number of external components required to build a radio subsystem by more than one-half, significantly reducing the size, cost and power requirements of next-generation multi-band GSM/GPRS handsets. The combination of the DCR with Skyworks' iPAC PA module creates a fully integrated RF section in an extremely compact footprint that has the flexibility to be combined with virtually any baseband solution currently available on the market.
