Skyworks Surpasses 25 Million DCR Shipment Milestone; World's First Single-Chip RF Transceiver Gaining Momentum in Next Generation Handsets
WOBURN, Mass., Dec 4, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:SWKS), the industry's leading wireless semiconductor company focused on radio frequency (RF) and complete cellular system solutions for mobile communications applications, today announced it has shipped more than 25 million DCR transceivers. Used by over 20 handset manufacturers worldwide in more than 75 models, Skyworks' single-chip direct conversion radio transceiver is offered on a standalone basis and leveraged as a key element within the company's multi-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE RF subsystem, Single Package Radio (SPR) and cellular system solutions.
"Skyworks launched the world's first single-chip DCR transceiver less than two years ago and today surpassed the 25 millionth shipment milestone, demonstrating the broad adoption of our leadership RF technology and exemplifying our customers' desire to increasingly migrate to higher levels of system integration," said Mohy Abdelgany, vice president of RF Solutions at Skyworks. "Our DCR has radically simplified cellular phone architectures, reduced cost, improved handset power efficiency and enabled key features such as built-in cameras and large color screens. Based on current design activity for next generation solutions such as our single-chip EDGE DCR, we expect continued strong product traction and a steep shipment trajectory."
Skyworks' DCR devices cut the number of external components required to build a radio subsystem by more than one-half, reducing the overall bill-of-materials and freeing valuable board space. This reduction in size and cost enables wireless terminal manufacturers to add the memory needed to support the advanced features required by today's wireless service providers in their next-generation quad-band (GSM850, EGSM900, DCS1800 and PCS1900) GSM/GPRS/EDGE designs.
